Session 4 – Standard Infection Control Precautions (SICPs) in Social Care Part 1

  • Elements of Standard Infection Control Precautions
  • Hand Hygiene
  • Teaching methodologies for hand hygiene
  • Reducing risks to staff – Personal Protective Equipment; prevention of sharps injuries; staff health

Session 5 – Standard Precautions Part 2

  • Principles of asepsis
  • Microbiological specimen collection

Session 8 – Risk Assessment, Surveillance and Annual Programme

  • Importance of risk assessment and the role of the Code of Practice
  • Using audit to identify risks / gaps in care homes
  • Surveillance of infections in care homes
  • Developing an annual programme / annual report

Group work – risk assessment

Session 9 – Outbreak Management

  • Outbreaks of viral gastro-enteritis – including group work
  • Update on coronavirus
