General Medical Providers

The Health & Social Care Act (2008) sets the overall framework for the regulation of health and adult social care activities by the Care Quality Commission. In support of the act, the Code of Practice on the Prevention and Control of Infections and related guidance (2022) provides explicit guidance for providers to support them and their staff in the delivery of safe and effective care, minimising or eliminating risks from healthcare-associated infections. Criterion 9 of the Code requires service providers to have a range of policies and procedures that will help prevent and control the transmission of infections. The Code contains a list of 30 separate policies, with the expectation that service providers will have policies on all issues of relevance to their service e.g. hand hygiene, protective clothing (PPE), management of sharps injuries etc.

Primary care/general medical providers whether in health centre, walk-in centres, Out of Hours services, urgent treatment centres or general practice facilities need access to a reference source for the wide variety of circumstances that will be presented. This primary care infection control manual includes full references to the communicable and reportable infections and a section for dealing with outbreaks in care homes or care homes home visits, which a GP may need to be involved with. This specific manual has been fully updated to bring in the changes of 2025 including Cleaning Standards (2025) Waste Management. All our infection control polices, and standard operating procedures are in full compliance with the Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities)(Amendment) Regulations 2025, Code of Practice 2022 and all related Legislation and Guidance.

This primary care policy and procedures manual provides a comprehensive range of documents/policies and/or standard operating procedures, covering all aspects of infection prevention and control – both policies and safe practice guidance – divided into sections. Each policy clearly explains how infection prevention and control practices can be applied in your environment to ensure prevention as well as service user and staff safety. Available as both hard copy and pdf formats– the latter hyperlinked for ease of use – these manuals are an essential reference source for all staff.

On producing the manual, it will come with the name of the facility named throughout each page with the relevant start and review dates. If you wish to add your logo this is at extra cost – please contact the office to arrange this service on 0208 906 2777.
